APES- Excerpt from “Silent Spring” by Rachel Carson
1: What observations did Rachel Carson make about her environment? Explain in detail.
The observations that Rachel Carson make about her environment are that the environment started to change really fast from how it was before. The farm animals started to get ill from a mysterious illness and died. That illness also started to kill many people and their families. A few birds that were caught in sight could not fly and no chicks hatched and on the mornings there was hardly no sound anymore. Farmers were unable to raise their pigs because their litters are so small that only a few would survive. Even though the apple trees would bloom, there wasn’t bees around to pollinate them to produce fruit. The road sides would be unattractive since they were lined with vegetation that was swept by fire. The streams had no life in them because no fish were living in them.
2: How have chemicals changed the environment? What is DDT? What is it used for and what are the consequences of its use?
Chemicals change the environment by changing the course of nature. For example, it enters the grass or vegetation and it takes up and stays in our bones or the organism’s bones which remains until we die or they die. DDT is a chemical that was used to kill diseases, disinfecting, and insecticide and the consequences of its use were death and health problems. It was once believed that it was harmless, but it was proven wrong.
3: Carson uses Robert Frost’s poem, The Road Less Traveled, as an analogy for making choices about our future- what does she say about what we must do?
She says that we must make better choices for the sake of our environment and teach or educate those that tell us that we shouldn't use poisonous chemicals in our world. To take every opportunity that is open to us in order to make a difference.
4: This book was written in 1962- have people heeded the warning about the toxins in our environment?
People have heeded the warning about the toxins in our environment. Since we don’t use DDT anymore and to add the fact that it has been ban from our country. There has been less usage or need of toxins and chemicals since this book has been written.
5: What is your opinion of the book excerpt? Explain.
I believe that this book excerpt is good because it has changed a lot of things in America. Rachel Carson and her book have opened up our eyes in the way we viewed things and our actions towards the environment. For example, people became aware of how dangerous DDT actually was for us and the environment and our concern helped stop the usage of DDT. But how did it all started? By having someone who cared and spoke for what they believe was right that nobody else notice what they were doing wrong.
